Are Ice Caps Melting??????

You will probably hear over the next few days to weeks that the North Pole ice caps are melting, and that you will be able to sail there during the summer months within 10 years. If I were you, I would not be moving my sailboat from the safe harbors of Lake Lanier. Just plain old common sense would tell you that the ice caps over the north pole are not going to melt during their short summer season because IT'S TOO COLD UP THERE. When our most recent explorers and ice cap measurers started their trek over "disappearing ice caps", they were greated with -40C/-40F temperatures, which almost doomed the "fact gathering" survey from the beginning. After going only 455 km of their expected 1000 km trip, they and to be airlifted out because brutely cold winter conditions were setting in.Their conclusions were, nonetheless, the same as their expectations going in, namely, that the North Pole ice caps are thinning(even though Arctic shelf ice has actually expanded over the lst two years). If you are truely interested in this debate, please go to this website:http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/10/15/top-ten-reasons-why-i-think-catlin-arctic-ice-survey-data-cant-be-trusted/Thank you,Ken Cook

Lake Lanier as of this writing is at 1064.80'. This is 6.2' below full pool, but still over 7 feet above where we were this time last year. We're starting to wonder when Lanier will hit it's high mark and what it will be. The last two years have seen the high mark set on May 24 and May 6, so we're in that season. So, I propose a challenge to you the viewer. Guess the date and actual height that Lanier will top out at this season. Leave your guess right here on my blog by commenting. The winner will win ... potentially a shout out on the air and an autographed picture of me. So good luck. If you're looking for a couple of websites to help you out in your studies, here they are.Lanier's Current ReadingLanier's Historic LevelsGood Luck. We'll figure that the level should top off by mid June. Results then.Ken Cook

Good Weekend for a Good Book, Movie, etc.

Dear friends,This looks like a great weekend to take in a movie, read a good book, catch up on household chores, or take the kids to visit grandma and grandpa. That "much needed" rain that we're always talking about is coming this weekend, especially Saturday. Now, it remains to be seen exactly how much rain this system produces, but mostly likely, it will be far less than the drenching the Lake Lanier Basin needs for even a moderate rise on one to two feet. Most likely the metro area north of I-20 will total something between .50 and 1.50 inches of rain. South of !-20, amount are likely to be less, ranging from .25 to 1.0 inches-harding the kind of stuff that puts water in lakes at near record lows for this time of year.Lucky for Nascar that they were able to sandwich in a wonderful weekend at AMS, between the rain and snow of two weeks agao and the rain of this weekend. March is a terrible time to race in Atlanta. It's the wettest, most variable and fickle month we have. but when it comes to racing, who looks at the climatology of the area? Let's just race!Have a great one inside this weekend!Ken Cook

Dear friends,I saw a skier going down the mountain under the lift so I yelled, "Hey", "Hey", as loud as I could. He stopped, and better yet, he was a member of the Ski Patrol. We've all seen these men and women working on our ski slopes, but I never thought that I would need their services. My deepest thanks to Billy, who heard me, and to Jason, who came skiing down the mountain to calm me and to guide me around the cliff. Once I got down to Billy, I followed him down to familiar terrain. The men and women of the ski patrol everywhere, and I want to say, especially here at Kirkwood, are unsung heroes. helping people everyday, usually when you least expect it. So next time that you see a member of the ski patrol, please give him or her a nod and a hello to say thank you for what they do. Billy and Jason, I'll never forget you. With my profoundest thanks,Ken Cook

Dear friends,To recap from Part 1, I was stuck on a steep slope on the upper part of a mountain, from which I couldn't ski down.Making matters worse at this point was that my cell phone had no signal. I couldn't reach my wife, the operator, 911, no one. That gives you a pretty sick feeling. I decided that I had to get down the mountain, somehow, before it got dark. So I started sliding down the mountain on my backside, dragging my skies and poles with me. That didn't always work so well because some of the snow and ice was too soft to support me in places. It finally dawned on me to use the skies as sort of a sled or luge and slide down the mountain that way. So there I was luging down the mountain. I have a whole new appreciating for luge now. It can be pretty much fun. That worked for a while until I came to a nearly vertical cliff, and I felt trapped. The good news was that by this time, I was in sight of the lift that had brought me to that fateful position. Within a short time, I saw a skier going down the mountain about 500 or so yards away. I yelled at the top of my lungs, "Hey!", "Hey!". But did he hear me? Continued in Part 3 next week. Boy, I hope that I get back alright.Ken Cook

Dear friends, While on vacation last week, I was having a great time skiing at Kirkwood Mountain near Lake Tahoe. Kirkwood has everything from bunny beginner slopes to to super expert mind-boggling drop-offs. To end the day, I wanted to go to the top of the mountain, where I had not been, and take the blue run down, which is hard enough for me, to the areas that I had already skied. I knew, too, that it had some diamond and double diamond runs, which became evident as the lift began to ascend at about a 30 degree angle as we approached the top. I'm on lift #4, by the way. When I skied off the lift, I foolishly did not look to see which way the blue run was, and I went the wrong way because it looked easier. When I was a little way down the mountain and out of sight of everyone else, the bottom fell out of the terrain. Believe me, I am no expert skier and this was scary. There was NO way for me to ski down the mountain, and there was no way to back up. The problem was that the time was now 3:15 pm, quickly becoming 3:30 pm, and this place, like most, was going to close at 4 pm. Call for help, you say. Well, much to my dismay, my phone, which I had just used to call my wife a few minutes earlier, from the other side of the mountain, now had no signal....Part 2 to follow Friday or MondayKen Cook

Atlantan's Not Entitled to Water that Falls Here

Dear friends,In a stunning ruling from the U. S. Supreme Court this week, tne Court ruled that Atlantan's were not entitled to any more water from Lake Lanier. The Atlanta metro area draws about 500 million gallons of water a day from Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River and is looking for a little more. This is from rainwater that falls in northeast Georgia and is stored in Lake Lanier. Alabama says no to this request; Florida says no to this request and now the U. S. Supreme Court says no to this request. To me this makes no sense at all. Lake Lanier can easily supply 5 or 6 or 7 hundred million gallons of water a day to the Atlanta metro area. What lake Lanier cannot do during periods of drought is supply the 3 billion (with a B) gallons a day that are GUARANTEED to Florida through the "Endangered Species" act that it got enacted through Congress a few years ago. The act eccentially guarantees Florida a minimum flow of 5000 cubic feet a second from Woodruff Dam holding back Lake Seminole on the Georgia-Florida border. That's 37,500 gallons of water every second. That comes to over 3 Billion gallons a day. Under normally rainy times, this is no problem. After a recent heavy rain, I observed an average daily ouflow from Woodruff Dam at 77,000 cfs, which is so much water that it would add 15 feet to Lake Lanier in about 15 days and fill the lale completely up. During the late summer and fall of 2007, Florida was receiving its guaranteed 5000 cfs of water from a river system that was only yielding 2000 csf from north Georgia to the Florida border. This was, ostensibly, to guarantee the existence of mussles and prehistoric sturgeon, which are said to have been around for 50 million years. That's a long time! Quite a history of survival and adaptation. Now after 4, 999,950 years of survival without a Buford Dam and Lake Lanier, the mussles and Sturgeon can't survive without 3 Billion gallons of water a day from the Chattahoocheee and Lake Lanier. That's simply ridiculous. More to come. Stay tuned. Ken Cook
