Guantanamo Bay Prisoners!

Last week, the administration announced that it will try five Guantanamo prisoners -- including Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the self-declared mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks -- in federal court in New York. The fate of dozens of other detainees remains in limbo.
President Obama, ambitious fella that he is, knows when certain things are gonna take a bit longer than planned.
Such is the case of Guantanamo Bay, which the president admitted will not be closed by January. From The Washington Post:
"President Obama directly acknowledged for the first time Wednesday that the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay will not close by the January deadline he set, but he said he hoped to still achieve that goal sometime next year. Obama refused, however, to set a new deadline.
Maybe it's because our Government don't know where to put these Murdering Terrorist, who murder in the name of a false god!
In an interview in the Chinese capital with Major Garrett of Fox News , Obama claimed he was "not disappointed" that the Guantanamo deadline had slipped, saying he "knew this was going to be hard."
"People, I think understandably, are fearful after a lot of years where they were told that Guantanamo was critical to keep terrorists out," Obama said. Closing the facility, he added, is "also just technically hard."
Obama came to office pledging to shut a detainee facility that had become a symbol for prisoner abuse at the hands of American officials. He signed orders to shut the military prison by January 2010, but White House officials quickly encountered resistance from members of Congress opposed to moving prisoners to U.S. soil and from other countries they had hoped would accept detainees."
This one I have to disagree with President Obama! Forget the politics and social relationships with other countries.
These are evil people who will not freely give out information that can save lives in this country. So how do we get the information out of them?

Lindsey Graham Slams Birthers

Sen. Lindsey Graham, (R-S.C.) offered unusually blunt assessments of the fringe elements of his party and conservative media on Thursday, calling the popular and bombastic Fox News host Glenn Beck a "cynic" whose show was antithetical to American values.
"Only in America can you make that much money crying," Graham said of Beck. "Glenn Beck is not aligned with any party. He is aligned with cynicism and there has always been a market for cynics. But we became a great nation not because we are a nation of cynics. We became a great nation because we are a nation of believers."
Appearing before a crowd of Washington's elite power players and opinion-makers, Graham spoke largely without filter, offering acidic takes on subject well beyond Beck. The Senator called the birther community that questions the president's U.S. citizenship "crazy" and implored them to "knock this crap off" so the country could get on to more important matters.
"I'm here to tell you that those who think the president was not born in Hawaii are crazy," said Graham, who went on to dispel another myth: that Obama is a closet Muslim.
Say it ain't so Lindsey. But what about your party. A third of the south believes that stuff.

Wanda Sykes Show

I do not normally do this kind of thing, but... Fox 5 is probably my favorite channel in Atlanta and I watch it more than any other channel. I do not usually watch it too late, but tonight I had the news on and then the Wanda Sykes Show came on. I was embarrassed to even listen to it, in a room, by myself.
That is one of the most disgusting show's that I have ever seen. The language, the topics, etc. I was just shocked that you all would broadcast this type of show.
I even looked twice to make sure that the channel did not get changed to a cable channel. If you are that desperate for ratings, you might want to look down a different avenue.

This Weekend
Last weekend we saw highs of 69 Sat. and 74 Sunday. For the first weekend in November those temps are just awesome, and it came during an unbelievable stretch of weather last week. Well, Ida provided a break from the nice weather and brought flooding to the area (more on that coming up). Now, the nice weather is setting back up. We hit 72 yesterday, and will do a couple degrees better than that today. Slightly warmer tomorrow. We keep talking about it, but it's worth noting: This is the October weather we missed last month with all the rain and cooler temps. Yes, the colder air will be here by late month or into next month, but not within the next 10 days or so. Enjoy it while it's here.
Wrapping Ida
There were two scenarios that we were looking at last weekend for Ida. One would have a cold front sweep through early Tuesday, picking up the storm and pushing it northeast quickly, leaving us with maybe 1-2" at most, some spots seeing less than that. The other, which played out, would have the front hold off for a day before sweeping everything out. That started around 1am or so Wednesday morning. By that point, though, we had picked up a solid 3-5" around the area (impressive that that was the rainfall mentioned in the flood watch by the weather service as early as Sunday evening. It played out just like that, so a big shout out to the weather service.) We saw several rivers go into minor and moderate flood stage, but a far cry from what we saw in September. The good news for North GA - the worst of the storm happened well to our east through parts of the Carolinas and up the Mid-Atlantic, leading to 6 fatalaties and close to a foot of rain in spots along the Atlantic Coast. The good news for us here is that even though we had 3-5" of rain, it happened very slowly over a longer period of time. This allowed most of the rain to soak into the ground before running off, helping to lower the flash flooding and river flooding threat.
The Next Rain
Our next chance of rain may not roll in until late week. A very slow moving system looked to be rolling in by mid-week when Ken and I looked at everything yesterday. But this morning I'm not sold yet, so I really think the chance of rain won't work in until Friday. So, 2 pieces of good news. After all the rain on Tuesday, we'll have at least 6 more days to dry out. Secondly, the rain that we'll see should be very light as the system should be falling apart and pulling north as it works it. We'll see how it plays out. Have a good weekend.

Obama Ignores Terror Threat at His Own PerilCommunism is gone but Islamic radicalism and jihadism are with us. President Obama will have to find an effective way to deal with this new threat or the American people will find someone else who can.
In the wake of “11/5,” the attack at Fort Hood, Barack Obama faces a tough choice--like it or not.
The 44th president must choose to confront an unpleasant reality, head on--or else it will run him over. The issue is the threat of terrorist violence, here on the homefront.
Terrorism, and the debate over how to respond to terrorism, was the defining issue of the 43rd presidency. And now it’s apparent that Obama, too, will spend the bulk of his presidency confronting terror, from Afghanistan to new battlezones, such as central Texas.
Obama and fellow Democrats would rather, of course, talk about health care. But over the next few years, the Fort Hood shooting is going to be a bigger story, since it is connected to our relations, good and bad, with the entire Islamic world, including nuclear Pakistan and almost- nuclear Iran.
For his sake, and for ours, Obama needs to understand that sometimes even presidents don’t get to decide the agenda -- the agenda is decided for him. In such a situation, the question is whether or not the president can adapt to the new era and its new challenges.
So this president needs to launch an aggressive investigation, digging into every aspect of Thursday’s shooting rampage that left 13 dead and dozens injured. How did it happen? Who bears responsibility? And, most importantly, what must we change now? Otherwise, if Obama simply talks about health care and “cap-and-trade” and “don’t ask, don’t tell” and all the other staples of his 2008 agenda, he will be left in the dust by the cyclonic events of 2009 and beyond. And in the wake of the 11/5 shootings, his presidency could be blown away by a whirlwind of damaging leaks, embarrasing reports, and well-justified fears.
Obama will always have his base of support, of course, especially in the media. Taking their cues, as ever, from the siren song of secular liberalism, the Mainstream Media would rather talk about health care, with an occasional digression into gay marriage. As documented by the Media Research Center, MSM reporters are mostly loathe to draw anything outher than politically correct conclusions about the religious and ethnic dimensions of the Fort Hood mass murder.
Thus the MSM is likely to be left in the dust by more fearless, more energetic media. Columnists Dick Morris and Eileen McGann were blunt in their e-mail headline: “Ft. Hood Attack Was Terrorism.” And also on Sunday morning, the top dozen headlines at WorldNetDaily, a popular conservative Web site, dealt forcefully with Fort Hood. So while the MSM is bemoaning “stress,” “PTSD,” and “over-extension,” WorldNetDaily is offering an entirely different narrative, featuring headlines such as “Muslims: ‘America’s chickens have come to roost,’ U.S. Islamic street preachers declare Fort Hood victims got just desserts,” and “Shooter advised Obama Transition: Fort Hood triggerman aided team on Homeland Security task force,” and “Military jihadists fill ‘every branch’: Ultimate 5th column penetration, warns best-selling ‘Muslim Mafia’ [author]” One additional piece was penned by Joseph Farah, the Arab-American editor of WND, whose headline blared, “PC sickness killed our soldiers.” How will the commander-in-chief react to that?
Having bungled his first public remarks after the news of the killings at Fort Hood, Obama is already on the defensive. So, most likely, he and his staff will seek to change the subject as quickly as possible.
But if they try doing that, getting back to, say, “the public option,” they will fail. Because the issue isn’t going away. As Georgetown University terrorism expert Bruce Hoffman said over the weekend:
“I’m not saying it’s part of an organized campaign or a systematic strategy, but we're seeing a sea change when we have once a month a plot that is related somehow to Afghanistan, Iraq or what these people see is a war against Islam. It's too easy to dismiss them as unstable individuals when they have expressed strong religious beliefs with politics. That's the essence of the radicalization we're facing.”
In other words, Fort Hood was not a random event; it was part of a pattern.
The irony is that Obama could dominate the counter-terrorism issue, if he wanted to. The president has the governing tools that might really make a difference; he oversees the entire Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, and the Justice Department -- including the FBI. If he uses his vast authority to force a thorough, let-the-chips-fall-where-they-may investigation, demanding full accountability while chasing down every last lead and angle, the American people, most of them, will feel reassured.
But if he allows the bureaucracy to cover its own collective posterior, if he fails to force meaningful reform on the system, if he accepts a “lone gunman” thesis, then America will be convulsed with mistrust, even paranoia. Unfortunately, Obama, whose resume includes no executive experience before becoming president, seems singularly ill-equipped to ride herd over a sprawling bureaucracy.
And if the bureaucrats mislead Obama, and if he passes along their misleading conclusions to the American people -- it will be Obama who gets blamed. The buck stops with him. He won’t be able to hide behind his TelePrompter.
Meanwhile, others, more determined to find answers, and less worried about upsetting the apple cart, will be pressing ahead. One such person who is already leading the charge is Sen. Joe Lieberman, chairman of the Homeland Security Committee. He has already announced that he will be launching his own investigation. Lieberman, a former Democrat and now an independent, endorsed John McCain in the election last year, in large measure because he mistrusted Obama on national security. And for their part, the Obamans probably dislike Lieberman more than any politician this side of Joe Wilson. So expect a rancorous inquiry.
But to the American people, the issue isn’t Lieberman, or any politico. The huge looming issue is security for America. We went through a period similar to this in the 1940s, when Americans started to fear that the establishment, led by a Democratic president, was not being sufficiently vigilant about the threat posed by communism. Those concerns, rational and irrational, soon cost the Democrats the presidency; indeed, they vexed American politics for the next four decades.
Now communism is gone, but Islamic radicalism and jihadism are with us. Obama will have to find an effective way to deal with this new threat or the American people will find someone else who can.

In the wake of the terrorist strike on our soldiers at Fort Hood, one individual’s still missing in action: Our commander in chief. The massacre’s 51 casualties, including 13 dead, were insufficient to drag President Obama away from the White House Happy Hour.
We just saw the worst terror attack on America since 9/11. And Obama couldn’t adjust his schedule to support our grieving troops.
Instead, we got his subtle defense of the perp: Unwilling to use the word “terror,” let alone the phrase “Islamist terror,” Obama warned us not to “rush to judgment.”
A Muslim fanatic, known to the FBI as a fan of suicide bombers and to colleagues as an opponent of our government, coolly buys weapons, heads to a military facilityhe knows will be packed with unsuspecting soldiers, waits for the crowd to thicken, then shouts, “Allah is great!” and guns down 51 patriots, calmly reloading among the dead and dying.
But don’t rush to judgment.
Imagine if, instead of Fort Hood, the massacre had gone down at a mosque in Detroit — carried out by a maddened Christian or Jew. Obama would’ve been aboard Air Force One before the pilots had time to file a flight plan and he would’ve been on site before the gun smoke cleared, hugging and boo-hooing and dispensing stirring rhetoric for the evening news.
But go out of his way to rally our butchered troops? Not a chance. It’s not like they’re real human beings with Ivy League degrees. When Obama got word of the attack, he didn’t even lose his fabled cool.
Obama may be shamed into visiting Ft. Hood at some point, but his priority since Thursday has remained socializing American medicine. What happens in Texas, stays in Texas.
Move on? Yes we can!
Of course, this act of Islamist terrorism has been an inconvenience to a president whose administration insists there’s no such thing. Those dead and wounded soldiers are such an embarrassment. If only a Baptist or Lutheran had been the shooter, things would’ve been so much tidier.
What’s next? The White House is going to bring heavy pressure on the FBI, through Attorney General Eric Holder, to play down investigative results confirming that Maj. Nidal Hasan was motivated by his Muslim beliefs.
Instead, we’ll hear even more about the “harassment” Hasan suffered as the media toe the line laid down by the vile lead editorial in Saturday’s New York Times and how this calculating terrorist contracted PTSD from his patients.
Let me kill the harassment myth right now: Political correctness rules in today’s Army. We even protect our enemies these days. Had any soldier harassed Hasan because of his Islamist nuttiness, that soldier would’ve disappeared faster than a Franklin on a Times Square sidewalk.
Any snarky remarks directed toward Hasan — if there were any — would’ve come in reaction to his railing against our government, our military’s mission and the monstrous injustice that, after grabbing an education in psychiatry worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from our military, he might have had to do his duty.
Far from being harassed himself, this creep was allowed to harass the soldiers he treated for stress disorders. According to colleagues, Hasan not only argued with his patients about our wars, but preached Islam to those under his care. (Just what troubled vets needed, no doubt.)
Prejudice? You bet. In this terrorist’s favor. Nobody in Hasan’s chain of command had the sense of duty to weed this pervert out. Why? Hasan would’ve accused them of discrimination. And the officer who brought charges against Hasan would’ve been the one whose career suffered.
Since writing on this travesty in the Post and speaking out on Fox News, I’ve been deluged with supportive messages — many from soldiers outraged at the politically correct treatment of this terrorist by the media, by senior military leaders — and by the president.
How many more Americans have to die, at home and in war, before our president admits that there is, indeed, such a thing as Islamist terror? Will he ever admit that it played a role in the tragedy at Fort Hood?
Not a chance. Islam’s a religion of peace. America’s the problem. And don’t you forget it.

In the video, which captures Wright's appearance at a September 17, 2009, anniversary celebration of Monthly Review, Wright said that while the "corporate media" provide a "binary lens" of the world, in such terms as "communist versus Christian," Monthly Review offers what it calls "no-nonsense Marxism."
He added: "You dispel all the negative images we have been programmed to conjure up with just the mention of that word socialism or Marxism."
He called America "land of the greed and home of the slave."
At the Monthly Review celebration, however, he went into more detail about his own personal and political philosophy. He said that "My work with liberation theology, with Latin American theologians, with the Black Theology Project and with the Cuban Council of Churches taught me 30 years ago the importance of Marx and the Marxist analysis of the social realities of the vulnerable and the oppressed who were trying desperately to break free of the political economics undergirded by this country that were choking them and cutting off any hope of a possible future where all of the people would benefit."
He said that his "exposure to the FMLN in El Salvador, the Sandinistas in Nicaragua, and my presence at the 15th Jamahiriya in Libya taught me what I have read in the pages of the Monthly Review which is, as Joshua Stanton says, though we need not always agree with one another we must do the work necessary to at least understand one another."
The FMLN was the armed wing of the communist movement in El Salvador, while the Sandinistas are the communist movement in Nicaragua. The Cuban Council of Churches is controlled by the Castro regime.
Interestingly, Wright used his appearance at the Monthly Review event to quote Frantz Fanon, the revolutionary also cited in Obama's book, Dreams from My Father.
However, his only reference to Obama in the speech came when he complained about Obama going to "beg the big fat cats" on Wall Street to stop irresponsible financial practices. (full article here)

In an exclusive interview to air this Sunday, Limbaugh said if passed this will be "the biggest snatch of freedom and liberty that has yet occurred in this country."
"This is not about insuring the uninsured this is not about health care. This is about stealing one sixth of the U.S. private sector and putting it under the control of the federal government," Limbaugh told Chris Wallace host of FOX News Sunday.

Health Reform Cheat Sheet

The House of Representative’s version of health-care reform will cost more than the $894 bn 10-year price tag cited by the Congressional Budget Office.
That’s because the CBO and Congress do not address human responses to legislation. Tax something more, you ultimately take in less in taxes. Penalize a company, and it finds ways to dodge the penalty.
And lawmakers have put in this unintended consequence: The individual premium costs in public option to take care of the poor are actually higher than other offerings.
That’s right, the CBO says the public plan’s premiums are higher than the premiums in the public exchanges, undermining the House’s claim that it will attract 9 mn enrollees by 2019 and result in a two-thirds decrease in the number of uninsured adults in the U.S.
Use the following as a cheat sheet in coming days as the health-care reform bill wends its way through Congress. The cheat sheet provides an X-ray to this impenetrably dense bill and the CBO’s scoring. The unintended consequences from this bill will be manifold.
You’ll see the CBO is struggling mightily to score these legislative phantasms, noting its work is not done and that its estimates are “subject to substantial uncertainty.”
Watch for Congressional statements that, while technically accurate, will also keep you barefoot and clueless on health reform, as the layers upon layers of provisions make the reform bill as transparent as a bucket of tar. And which means the resulting deficit spending from this bill will only add to a U.S. debt load now big enough to block out the sun.
Keep this in mind when you see the tax revenue the CBO and Congress claim the bill will raise to cover the costs. Both the CBO and Congress tend to not take into account the fact that individuals and companies reorganize their lives to avoid paying taxes.
Health-care tax, or penalties, or whatever they call it will just mean people will carry on avoidance schemes, which means less revenues. Tax the rich, they’ll shelter it. Tax the Cadillac health insurance plans, insurers won’t offer them.
Because the CBO and Congress generally do not take into account human behavior when scoring a bill (they use what’s called the “static,” not the “dynamic,” scoring model), the revenue estimates from the CBO and Congress on past tax legislation have been off by a factor of $150 bn or more.
Also, the reform bill’s taxes are not indexed to inflation, so as more middle-class pay rises into those brackets, more middle- class people will be hurt.
Here are the details:
The New SpendingIt includes $1.1 tn in new spending over 10 years: $425 bn increases to Medicaid and SCHIP; $605 bn on subsidies for the poor to buy insurance; $57 bn in spending on primary care increases; and $34 bn in new spending on public health initiatives.
The New Costs
The bill’s costs are offset by a new tax surcharge on high-income individuals and other provisions estimated to increase federal revenues by $572 bn; and $168 bn in collections of penalties paid by individuals if they don't buy insurance ($33 bn estimated) and employers ($135 bn) if they don’t buy health insurance for their workers.
To pay for the bill, the House is also counting on other undefined spending changes. That includes fee cuts for nonphysicians, meaning other health care providers, of $229 bn, and Medicare Advantage cuts of $170 bn ($245 bn in Medicare cuts to doctors over ten years has since been nixed; that cost is now moving into other government budget line items). It’s also counting on wringing tens of billions of dollars in waste and fraud out of the system to pay for the bill.
The Reality Check That Bounced
Ok, think this through. Higher taxes on the rich have historially not delivered the revenues promised because the rich shelter their income, IRS data show.
And the pool of taxpayers that would supposedly toss off all this tax revenue is not that vast and deep--the 5.4% surtax on singles earnings $500,000 in the house bill, married couples earning $1 mn--is only 494,967, based on 2007 IRS data, the last year for which data is available, notes William Ahern of the Tax Foundation.
Tax cuts can deliver revenues -- the Clinton tax cuts on estates and capital gains delivered more revenues than promised tax revenues from the tax hikes on the rich, according to IRS data.
And do you really believe that future Congresses over the next 10 years will hang tough and make the $399 bn in total reimbursement cuts to hospitals, other providers, and Medicare Advantage, each year for 10 years straight?
Remember, the 1997 Balanced Budget Act tried to chase down this exact strategy, but Congress undid those cuts and reimbursed providers anyway.
And watch out for the promises to cut waste and fraud out of the system that the House is counting on from the American Medical Association and hospitals.
You really think the AMA can corral the 135,000 active doctors in its membership to deliver on these promises? Or that the nation’s 5,700 hospitals will all fall in line?
How Employers Will React
The “play-or-pay” requirement on employers says they would either have to offer “qualifying” insurance to their employees and contribute a substantial share toward the premiums, or pay a fee to the federal government that would generally equal 8% of their payroll.
It’s an easy choice for employers: Lay off and not hire workers if the insurance costs are too high, or just pay the extra 8% payroll tax and dump workers on the public plan. Which means more costs to the U.S. taxpayer.
State Taxes May Rise
Moreover, the federal funding for Medicaid to take care of extra enrollees will only cover 70% of the state’s costs. The rest the states have to pay for. That means state taxes rise.
Public Option’s Not So Cheap Premiums
The primary rationale espoused by Democrats for the government-run health care plan is that it would drive down costs by providing a lower cost option than private plans (and thus force the greedy insurance companies to lower their “exorbitant” rates to compete), notes Fox News analyst James Farrell.
But will the poor really sign up for the public option since its premiums are higher than the average private industry plan in the new proposed insurance exchanges? How would the public option drive down insurance costs through competition if its premiums are higher than the average private industry plan in the exchanges?
The CBO finds that under the House plan, the government-run plan would actually charge higher premiums:
"That estimate of enrollment reflects CBO’s assessment that a public plan paying negotiated rates would attract a broad network of providers but would typically have premiums that are somewhat higher than the average premiums for the private plans in the exchanges."
The Opt Out is Not an Option
Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced the health-care bill will have a public option and a way for states to opt out of the public option (the House bill does not include an opt-out ).
It’s a charade — taxpayers in states that opt out will get taxed anyway to pay for the bill. And who in each state gets to decide to trigger the opt out escape hatch? Voters? State legislators? The DMV?
A churlish reaction would be this: couldn't the states turn around and say they want to opt out of the fed’s unfunded mandates —like the expansion of Medicaid to pay for the health reform bill, where they’ll have to pony up 30%?
The Arizona Legislature already passed the Health Care Freedom Act, which places an initiative on the 2010 ballot allowing citizens to vote to decide whether the state should opt out of the entire health care reform bill, notes Darrell M. West, vice president and director of governance studies at the Brookings Institution. Other states are considering similar legislation, West says.
And West wonders if unhealthy people will migrate to states with a public option if their own jurisdiction opts out of the national system. States may be tempted to establish residency requirements for health care the way they did for welfare, he says, possibly making it more difficult for the uninsured to get coverage in those areas.
Also, if states don’t like congressional decisions on gun control, climate change or immigration, will state legislators demand an opt-out? “If this were 1965 and there were a Medicare opt-out, it is conceivable we would have ended up with two-thirds of the country having Medicare, while one-third did not,” West says.

U.S. official resigns over Afg

When Matthew Hoh joined the Foreign Service early this year, he was exactly the kind of smart civil-military hybrid the administration was looking for to help expand its development efforts in Afghanistan.
A former Marine Corps captain with combat experience in Iraq, Hoh had also served in uniform at the Pentagon, and as a civilian in Iraq and at the State Department. By July, he was the senior U.S. civilian in Zabul province, a Taliban hotbed.
But last month, in a move that has sent ripples all the way to the White House, Hoh, 36, became the first U.S. official known to resign in protest over the Afghan war, which he had come to believe simply fueled the insurgency.
"I have lost understanding of and confidence in the strategic purposes of the United States' presence in Afghanistan," he wrote Sept. 10 in a four-page letter to the department's head of personnel. "I have doubts and reservations about our current strategy and planned future strategy, but my resignation is based not upon how we are pursuing this war, but why and to what end."
The reaction to Hoh's letter was immediate. Senior U.S. officials, concerned that they would lose an outstanding officer and perhaps gain a prominent critic, appealed to him to stay.
U.S. Ambassador Karl W. Eikenberry brought him to Kabul and offered him a job on his senior embassy staff. Hoh declined. From there, he was flown home for a face-to-face meeting with Richard C. Holbrooke, the administration's special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
"We took his letter very seriously, because he was a good officer," Holbrooke said in an interview. "We all thought that given how serious his letter was, how much commitment there was, and his prior track record, we should pay close attention to him."
While he did not share Hoh's view that the war "wasn't worth the fight," Holbrooke said, "I agreed with much of his analysis." He asked Hoh to join his team in Washington, saying that "if he really wanted to affect policy and help reduce the cost of the war on lives and treasure," why not be "inside the building, rather than outside, where you can get a lot of attention but you won't have the same political impact?"
Hoh accepted the argument and the job, but changed his mind a week later. "I recognize the career implications, but it wasn't the right thing to do," he said in an interview Friday, two days after his resignation became final.
"I'm not some peacenik, pot-smoking hippie who wants everyone to be in love," Hoh said. Although he said his time in Zabul was the "second-best job I've ever had," his dominant experience is from the Marines, where many of his closest friends still serve.
"There are plenty of dudes who need to be killed," he said of al-Qaeda and the Taliban. "I was never more happy than when our Iraq team whacked a bunch of guys."
But many Afghans, he wrote in his resignation letter, are fighting the United States largely because its troops are there -- a growing military presence in villages and valleys where outsiders, including other Afghans, are not welcome and where the corrupt, U.S.-backed national government is rejected. While the Taliban is a malign presence, and Pakistan-based al-Qaeda needs to be confronted, he said, the United States is asking its troops to die in Afghanistan for what is essentially a far-off civil war.
Page (2) As the White House deliberates over whether to deploy more troops, Hoh said he decided to speak out publicly because "I want people in Iowa, people in Arkansas, people in Arizona, to call their congressman and say, 'Listen, I don't think this is right.' "

This week, Hoh is scheduled to meet with Vice President Biden's foreign policy adviser, Antony Blinken, at Blinken's invitation.
If the United States is to remain in Afghanistan, Hoh said, he would advise a reduction in combat forces.
He also would suggest providing more support for Pakistan, better U.S. communication and propaganda skills to match those of al-Qaeda, and more pressure on Afghan President Hamid Karzai to clean up government corruption -- all options being discussed in White House deliberations.
"We want to have some kind of governance there, and we have some obligation for it not to be a bloodbath," Hoh said. "But you have to draw the line somewhere, and say this is their problem to solve."

Voter Fraud Probe Heats Up

The voter fraud investigation of allegedly forged absentee ballots in Troy, New York is gaining national attention.
Bob Mirch, the Republican Majority Leader of the Rensselaer County legislature appeared on the Fox News Channel at 11:40 a.m. on Sunday, October 25th and said he met with the New York State police regarding the investigation. The State Troopers are not talking, referring any public statements to the special prosecutor, Trey Smith, who is mum on the unfolding investigation in which "Democratic and Working Families Party" operatives have been accused of trying to throw the general election next week by allegedly forging ballots from the September 15th primary.
Troy Democratic Chairman Frank LaPosta also appeared on Fox News, claiming any wrongdoing was conducted by what he called "rouge Democrats."
Democratic candidates often try to secure the endorsement of the Working Families Party line in order to secure the extra votes the WFP can bring on election day. The party has recently become a more politically potent presence in New York State, eclipsing the Liberal party in its role as a companion to many Democratic candidates. The W.F.P does not come without controversy, it's co-Founder is Bertha Lewis, the C.E.O. of the embattled activist group ACORN, and President Obama's political director, Patrick Gaspard, "worked with ACORN in New York to set up the Working Families political party and sat on the party's board with Ms. Lewis," according to "The New York Times."
The Rensselaer Democratic County Chairman, Tom Wade, told Fox News that he wants an investigation of the Republicans, including the handling of absentee ballots for the whole county, not just the recent primary.
The Chairman of the W.F.P. would not comment on the scandal, but it has become a hot political issue. This follows recent absentee ballot fraud allegations in Atlantic City, New Jersey and Inglewood, California.
Jan Tyler, a former Denver Elections official who runs the website "Election Neutrality Now," notes absentee ballot fraud is a "simple strategy employed by mostly Democratic activists and their community organizing allies." She notes: "That easily accessible strategy uses bloated voter lists, where names of voters who have moved can be easily located. Applications are then requested by activists, who in some states may even have ballots mailed to a separate address, making the fraud more convenient. Since signature verification procedures are often lax or poorly administered, one activist can sign for hundreds, even thousands of ballots."
The Troy case doesn't even seem that complicated. Troy voters told Fox News that they never signed absentee ballot forms that were submitted in their names. Some told us men knocked on their doors asking them to sign applications, and they never even knew those were allegedly used to fill out ballots that were then submitted as real votes. 38 of the ballots have been thrown out by a New York State Supreme Court Judge, who ruled that there were "significant election law violations that have compromised the rights of numerous voters and the integrity of the election process."
