Get Hungry
- From: ferret454
-
Description:
America, being the land of plenty, hasn’t seen hunger in a while. There are extremely few that have to be in a state of starvation. A “poor” man here has an enormous welfare system (private and public) to assist him. He has no caste system which regards him as unsalvageable. Many have worked their way from obscurity to greatness. There was no secret society pulling strings for a vast majority of these people. They just focused, and worked hard. They were HUNGRY.
I mention this because I see that people are angry. I see that people are fearful of the oncoming changes. They write a blog, they talk to friends, they may even write the rare letter to their representative. Most will not go this far.
These are great ways to talk about issues. No doubt, these means have educated many about the destructive agenda hanging over our heads now. The problem is that we have been fed at the table of comfort for so long that getting out and demonstrating seems meager and paltry fare. We see the ideas of free speech as requiring an expensive and refined outlet.
Our forefathers in The American Revolution walked through snow, with little to no winter clothes to fight for the establishment of this nation. They were hungry, hungry for a land where their children would be free to become what they dreamed. They were hungry for the safety of independence, not for the programs and bureaucracies of another totalitarian nanny state. They hungered for the vitality of action and transaction between free men.
They settled land and worked hard to establish these ideas in the minds of their children, and grandchildren. They had a hunger for themselves, and their families, to produce the good life they labored for. Of themselves they shared, of their own accord they helped each other.
Their industry was not always selfless, but it was beneficial to us all. It built the roads west, and the ports of the east coast, the farms that fed the nation and later the factories that provided countless goods. Never did they demand of their children a life of servitude in exchange. What they did, the very labor of their hands, the blood they spilled was for their childrens freedom, their INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY!
Then, dare we, today sit idly by while usurpers tell us that our wages are theirs for the taking , that our well being will be at their discretion, That a man’s Ideas will be subject to the review of some self promoting potentate?
Will the comfort of a weak mans chair be the price of our liberty!
You are not hungry America! You are engorged with the mindless and superficial materials in your lives. You show the brand of your shirt like a wartime medal, but refuse to stand for a flag your fathers raised with bruised and bloody hands! You cast aspersions on the earliest settlers, call them evil and greedy, and have the nerve to stand on the very foundation they built. You speak of hard times as if your wide screen television was a harness and your air conditioning a goad. You are a sad and pathetic parody of the great and mighty people that blessed the ground with prayerful lives.
I am ashamed of the softness, the spinelessness that seems to have taken the American man. Where is the hunger? Where is the drive? What happened to the men and women that stood for rights?
America do not wrap yourself in the chains of tyranny! Do not doze in the comforts of privilege! You must stand for your rights or be buried in the annals of histories tragic failures. Stand, stand for your rights! Speak, demonstrate, and tell them that you are free! It is your freedom to lose. Get hungry or starve America!

The Randolph Report
- From: Randolph
-
Description:
DO YOU REMEMBER WHEN...?
All the girls had ugly gym uniforms?
Nearly everyone's Mom was at home when the kids got home from school?
Nobody owned a purebred dog?

When a 55 Chevy was everyone's dream car...to cruise,
peel out, lay rubber or watch submarine races, and people went steady?
No one ever asked where the car keys were
because they were always in the car,
in the ignition, and the doors were never locked?
Lying on your back in the grass with your friends
and saying things like, "That cloud looks like a ..."
and playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game?
Stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals
because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger?
And with all our progress, don't you just wish, just once,
you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace,
and share it with the children of today?
When being sent to the principal's office was nothing
compared to the fate that awaited the student at home?
Basically we were in fear for our lives,
but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc.
Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat!
But we survived because their love was greater than the threat.
Send this on to someone who can still remember
Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Laurel and Hardy,
Howdy Doody and the Peanut Gallery,
the Lone Ranger, The Shadow Knows,
Nellie Bell, Roy and Dale, Trigger and Buttermilk.
As well as summers filled with bike rides, baseball games,
Hula Hoops, bowling and visits to the pool,
and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.
Didn't that feel good, just to go back and say, "Yeah, I remember that"?
I am sharing this with you today
because it ended with a double dog dare to pass it on.
To remember what a double dog dare is, read on.
And remember that the perfect age is somewhere between
old enough to know better and too young to care.
How many of these do you remember?
Candy cigarettes
Wax Coke-shaped bottles with colored sugar water inside
Soda pop machines that dispensed glass bottles
Coffee shops with tableside jukeboxes
Blackjack, Clove and Teaberry chewing gum
Home milk delivery in glass bottles with cardboard stoppers
Newsreels before the movie
P.F. Fliers
Telephone numbers with a word prefix....(Raymond 4-601).
Party lines
Peashooters
Howdy Doody
45 RPM records
Green Stamps
Hi-Fi's
Metal ice cubes trays with levers
Mimeograph paper
Beanie and Cecil
Roller-skate keys
Cork pop guns
Drive ins
Studebakers
Washtub wringers
The Fuller Brush Man
Reel-To-Reel tape recorders
Tinkertoys
Erector Sets
The Fort Apache Play Set
Lincoln Logs
15 cent McDonald hamburgers
5 cent packs of baseball cards -
with that awful pink slab of bubble gum
Penny candy
35 cent a gallon gasoline
Jiffy Pop popcorn
Do you remember a time when...
Decisions were made by going "eeny-meeny-miney-moe"?
Mistakes were corrected by simply exclaiming, "Do Over!"?
"Race issue" meant arguing about who ran the fastest?
Catching the fireflies could happily occupy an entire evening?
It wasn't odd to have two or three "Best Friends"?
The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was "cooties"?
Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot?
A foot of snow was a dream come true?
Saturday morning cartoons weren't 30-minute commercials for action figures?
"Oly-oly-oxen-free" made perfect sense?
Spinning around, getting dizzy, and falling down was cause for giggles?
The worst embarrassment was being picked last for a team?
War was a card game?
Baseball cards in the spokes transformed any bike into a motorcycle?
Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin?
Water balloons were the ultimate weapon?
If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!!!!!!!
Pass this on to anyone who may need a break from
their "grown-up" life . . I double-dog-dare-ya!
You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped,
without asking, all for free, every time?
And you didn't pay for air? And, you got trading stamps to boot?
Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box?
It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner
at a real restaurant with your parents?
They threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed. . ...and they did?
When a quarter was a decent allowance?
You'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny?
Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces?
All your male teachers wore neckties and female teachers had
their hair done every day and wore high heels?
It took five minutes for the TV warm up? - Blog post

Almost 300 Years
- From: gstrader

Description:
Three Hundred Years almost, what have we learned? What have we forgotten?
July 4th,1776...how many even know the Declaration that begat our great nation?
How many understand the sacrifice of those who marched in the snow, barefoot and bleeding at Valley Forge;of those who fought at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, those citizen soldiers who put up their lives, their fortunes, even their homes and family to fight for something better? What about all those who have come since? The Doughboy, who lay in trenches and foxholes in the ground, gasping for air as they were being gassed. What about the GI freezing in the snow in the winter of 1943 in the forests of Europe? Does anyone remember them? What of those that went to Korea, them that froze, and slogged in the rain, getting trenchfoot? The nightmare that awaited them in the mountians in this place so far removed from their home?
Korea was not even declared a war, they called it (A police action)...no matter what it was called, our own suffered and died all the same.
What about Viet Nam? Another War not called a war...those brave men were sent in harms way to take a hill, only to turn and leave it as ordered. For their trouble, they were cursed, and spit upon when they came home. Does anyone remember them?
Today, we have new battle fronts, the Afgans, and Iraq. Brave men and women who have once again come to the defense and aid of this country, They are blown apart, while their children struggles at home, for a roof over their heads, and food in their stomach.
It has been Three Hundred Years, of brave Americans putting their selves, and their families in harms way, for your liberty, and freedom. This July 4th, while you are slipping that Hot Dog in your mouth, and washing it down with a cold drink, give
them a thought will you... take a moment to read the Declaration, and ponder its words.
Think about the words, what do they mean? Have they become distorted and preversed from their meaning?
Remember all those who took the words to heart and fought, remember them and say a prayer for them, and for our Nation to survive another 300 years. - Blog post

FIND THE COST OF FREEDOM
This Blog Post, will be the first part of a series, that will deal with the cost of freedom. In specfic, what it cost our fore fathers right here in the Triad, to secure our region, state, and nation
We will discover through historical accounts, the deeds, and the people that forged our neighborhood and nation. This is an exciting, story, and real people...not just dull history, so stay tuned.
Taken from: Revolutionary incidents and sketches ofcharacter chiefly in the "Old North State" : volumes 1 and2 Stmnt.Resp.: by E. W. Caruthers ; typed and indexedby Ruth F. Thompson. Authors: Caruthers, Eli W ,1799-1865 (Main Author) Thompson, Ruth F (AddedAuthor)Reproduced from my web site, Gary StraderMartha Bell“The following extract of a letter from General Gray of Randolph County, gives a good view of Mrs. Bell’s character, and will be read with interest. He is one of the oldest men in the country, and has a distinct recollection of many things which occurred during the Revolutionary War, but notwithstanding his advanced age, his mental faculties are very little, if at all, impaired. For intelligence, probity and consistency of Christian character, no man stands higher in the community; and as he writes, in this case, from personal acquaintance, his statements are perfectly reliable. The letter, which is dated Feb. 24th, 1854, was written at my request, and as it contains two or three other facts of interest, we shall recur to it again; but for the present, we give only the part which is confirmatory of the statements above made. After observing that he writes:in compliance with my request, he says: “I removed to Randolph Court House in the Spring of 1792, in the immediate vicinity of which Mrs. Bell, and the most of the Whigs of that county who had taken part in the war, resided; and from them I received all the information I am able to give you. Those who lived in the south and eastern parts of the county were mostly Tories, under the control of Colonel Fanning, or remained neutral from fear of him. Mr. Bell and his lady were both true friends to the cause of their country, and treated those who were engaged in its defence with the greatest kindness, friendship and hospitality; but the name of a Tory they despised; and if they ever prayed for them, I think it must have been such a prayer as David made in the 109th Psalm.“Mrs. Bell was much esteemed by those who knew her. She had a tender feeling for the sick and afflicted, administered to their wants, and, by her medical skill and attention, relieved many without fee or reward. She was a woman of strong mind, good understanding and invincible spirit. Alarms that would throw other females into fits only stimulated her to greater exertion both of body and mind; and often without a moment’s reflection, she would point out what ought to be done, which seldom failed to answer the purpose and give the necessary relief.” In proof that the above statements respecting her character are not exaggerated or overwrought, we shall give a few incidents of her life, but without attempting a strict adherence to chronological order; for at this distance of time, the precise dates and order of events could not be ascertained with entire certainty. After the death of her first husband, she carried on the whole of his business, farming, merchandising, etc., just as he had been doing. His farming operations were quite extensive for a new settler, and, in the store, he was obliged to barter a great deal, by exchanging goods fordeer skins, furs, flaxseed, beeswax and such articles as would bear carriage. When he wanted a supply of goods he took his produce to Petersburg in wagons; and thus, with a little money in addition, he laid in his supply. When the time came, loading his own wagon, and as many others as were necessary, he went along with them, on horseback, keeping with the wagons through the day, and lodging in some houseat night.Having incidentally learned from him, during his life time, the names of all his lodging places on the road, when the time came to recruit her stock of goods, she set off on her first trading expedition and found no difficulty either on her way thither or in making her purchases; butafter leaving Petersburg on her return, it commenced snowing early in the day; and she concluded to leave the wagons and get out of the snow as soon as possible. For a number of miles, a whole day’s journey, the road lay through a very barren country, in which there was not a house of any description, and the only growth of timber was that of the pine. The storm increased and the snow fell so could not be seen, she had traveled the route only once, and the snow was whirling about in every direction, driving in her face and blinding her until she could have no idea of the course and became completely lost; but, having learned, by some means or other, that the largest and heaviest limbs of the pine tree are always on the south side, she took that for her guide; and without going much out of her way, she arrived at her destined place of lodging, in good time and without having experienced any other inconvenience than that of a cold and disagreeable ride.rapidly that, in a little time the ground was completely covered and the road could not be distinguished. The sun could not be seen, she had traveled the route only once, and the snow was whirling about in every direction, driving in her face and blinding her until she could have no idea of the course and became completely lost; but, having learned, by some means or other, that the largest and heaviest limbs of the pine tree are always on the south side, she took that for her guide; and without going much out of her way, she arrived at her destined place of lodging, in good time and without having experienced any other inconvenience than that of a cold and disagreeable ride. - Blog post

Good Weekend for a Good Book,

Dear friends,
This looks like a great weekend to take in a movie, read a good book, catch up on household chores, or take the kids to visit grandma and grandpa. That "much needed" rain that we're always talking about is coming this weekend, especially Saturday. Now, it remains to be seen exactly how much rain this system produces, but mostly likely, it will be far less than the drenching the Lake Lanier Basin needs for even a moderate rise on one to two feet. Most likely the metro area north of I-20 will total something between .50 and 1.50 inches of rain. South of !-20, amount are likely to be less, ranging from .25 to 1.0 inches-harding the kind of stuff that puts water in lakes at near record lows for this time of year.
Lucky for Nascar that they were able to sandwich in a wonderful weekend at AMS, between the rain and snow of two weeks agao and the rain of this weekend. March is a terrible time to race in Atlanta. It's the wettest, most variable and fickle month we have. but when it comes to racing, who looks at the climatology of the area? Let's just race!
Have a great one inside this weekend!

Snow Last Weekend, Perfect Thi

The center of the low was expected to push due east across central GA on Sunday. However, the low did take a turn to the northeast, and as you can see in the snowfall totals map, it brought extremely heavy snow to parts of the viewing area. I thought 1-2" Sunday morning, but I knew that if all things came together we could get areas near 5". We ended up with spots of at least 7" around Athens and 5-6" near Columbus. Luckily I got about 3" at my house, so I came through for my 3 year old who wanted some snow to play in. If you missed out I apologize, and I don't know if we have enough weather magic to squeeze out another snowstorm this season. In the meantime, a big thank you to all the viewers who submitted pictures and emailed pictures. We ended up with a total of about 1000 between Ken's gallery and the emails we've all received. We've shown a lot of them this week, but obviously can't get to all of them. I also couldn't personally thank all the emails I got from viewers with snowfall totals. So, I'll issue a lump thank you for everybody and hopefully that will suffice. If you want to view more pictures, check here for Ken's Photo Gallery. Far Cry From That This Weekend
Nascar in town, Six Flags opening, plenty to do in and around town. I don't think we can do any better than this. We both literally and figuratively spring forward this weekend as our highs will be in the mid 70's both days. We'll stay in the 70's through mid-week as well, with both lows and highs well above our seasonal average. For me it's still a little too early to scalp the bermuda or plant the tender veg., but plenty of stuff to get done around the yard this weekend anyway. If you're like me you'll probably put it off until tomorrow so you can chase the kids around or play today. And then you'll probably put it off again tomorrow so you can do more of the same, but that's life. And why not? As crazy as things have been in the world and the economy, nice to have a weekend like this to take your mind off it. Have a good one. I'll talk to you tomorrow morning with a blog without weather. With Six Flags opening this weekend, I think I'll take a trip down memory lane tomorrow morning of some of my favorite memories from growing up going to Six Flags. Oh the heartbreak - Free Fall, Looping Starship, Z-Force ... GONE!! At least we still have the Mindbender. Right? More tomorrow morning. Have a good one.
